ΜΑΤΡΩΝΑ Η ΣΚΛΑΒΑ / MATRONA ANCILLA
Matrona was a servant of a lady in Thessaloniki in the 3rd century AD and she gave her life for her faith in Christ. During the Roman period in Greece the percentage of slaves was about 30% of the population of the cities. The percentage of financially independent citizens who could keep slaves in their household was less than 1.5%. Slaves, both male and female, had a very low life expectancy, dying at almost 18 years of age from the hardships and grueling work their masters subjected them to. The Matrona's death for her faith resulted either from the tortures to which her mistress herself subjected her, or from her imprisonment in a state prison. In the photo is a 4th-century mosaic from the Villa Romana del Casale in Sicily with a Roman lady (centre) going to the bath with her slaves. Saint Matrona would have been dressed like these. +E.
