Some sources want Emperor Maurice (539-602) to set August 15 as the date of the Assumption for the entire empire. According to the historians Theofylaktos Simokattes and Theophanes, the same emperor instituted a public procession to Vlachernae for the Memory of the Virgin Mary. In the West an edict of Pope Sergius (687-701) states that on the feast of the Dormition there must be a litany from San Adriano to Santa Maria Maggiore, the second major shrine of the Mother of God of the Empire. An important role in spreading the cult of the Virgin was also played by a solemn speech by John, Archbishop of Thessaloniki (end of the 6th - beginning of the 7th century) who delivered it in the third great Church of the Virgin Mary in the Empire, the "Acheiropoitos" of Thessaloniki.   An amazing celestial sphere with emerging angels and the gates of heaven opened wide from where one sees the white-clad Christ as the “Ancient of Days” was captured by the sensitivity of the painter of the Church of the Vlatadon Monastery in Thessaloniki in the 14th century. The divine experiences of the theopic students of Gregory Palamas, metropolitan of the city, (who was already dead when the church was painted) are reflected in the monumental painting of the church. Dorotheus Vlattis, metropolitan in place of his teacher Gregory and founder of the Monastery, continues the Palamical theology of the Uncreated Light of the Divine Transfiguration. All the Light of God captured in painting invites you to enjoy it! All-Light Greetings for the holiday. Photo: South arch of the Catholicon of the Vlatadon Monastery, Thessaloniki, 14th century. +E.   In the seaside area of Aurelianae there is the district called "Ta Dalmatou". The first monastery in Constantinople was built there by Saturninus, Senator of the emperor Theodosius I, at the end of the 4th century, to house the monk Isaac with the prophetic gift, whom the previous emperor Valens had imprisoned. The monastery was enlarged and fortified by Isaac's successor, abbot Dalmatus, a former soldier, who convinced Theodosius II, grandson of I, to accept the terms of the Third Ecumenical Council. Theodosius was moved when he saw Dalmatius coming out for the first time after 48 years from the walls of the monastery, leading a group of monks, to meet him. That is why he was called "Archimandrite" and "Exarch" of the monasteries that had been built in the meantime and "father of the monks" of the capital. It is perhaps the first reference to the officium of the “Archimandrite” and to the person with administrative jurisdiction over the ot...
