Η ΘΕΑ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΑ, ΤΑ ΓΛΥΚΑ ΤΩΝ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥΓΕΝΝΩΝ ΚΑΙ ΤΟ THANKSGIVING



Πάντα είχα απορία γιατί στο Άγιον Όρος φτιάχνουν λουκουμάδες την ημέρα του αγίου Ανδρέα ή αλλού του αγίου Στυλιανού. Σκεφτόμουν μήπως έχει σχέση με την θρονική εορτή του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου, αφού ο άγιος Ανδρέας θεωρείται ο ιδρυστής της Εκκλησίας της Κωνσταντινούπολης-Βυζαντίου. Αργότερα ανακάλυψα ότι το ίδιο κάνουν και στα χωριά της Θράκης και σε άλλα μέρη της Ελλάδας, όπως π.χ. στην Εύβοια, απ’ όπου κατάγομαι. Οι ημέρες που φτιάχνουν λουκουμάδες ποικίλουν, από τις 21 Νοεμβρίου, την εορτή των Εισοδίων της Παναγίας (που ονομάζεται «Μεσοσπορίτισσα» σε ορισμένα μέρη) έως και τις 30 Νοεμβρίου. Οι ημέρες αυτές είναι οι απαρχές του σπαρμού των χωραφιών και της συγκομιδής του ελαιόκαρπου. Φαίνεται πως το έθιμο σχετίζεται με την αρχαιότητα, αφού και οι αρχαίοι πρόγονοί μας έφτιαχναν «πλακούντας μετά μέλιττος» προς τιμήν της θεάς Δήμητρας με το φρέσκο λάδι που έβγαινε από τα λιοτρίβια, παράδοση που συνεχίζεται ακόμη και σήμερα όπως είδαμε, με χριστιανικό προσανατολισμό. Τα ονομαστά γλυκά των Χριστουγέννων, τα μελομακάρονα, σχετίζονται με την προσφορά σεμίδαλης, μελιού και καρυδιών στην αρχαία θεά της συγκομιδής. Η προσφορά καρπών και ελαίου επισημαίνεται σε άλλες περιοχές της χώρας με την παράδοση της γλυκιάς σούπας με στάρι και ξηρούς καρπούς, τη γνωστή «Βαρβάρα» στη μνήμη της ομώνυμης αγίας, στις αρχές του Δεκεμβρίου. Η παράδοση να ευλογούνται-προσφέρονται καρποί και παράγωγα λαδιού στο τέλος του Φθινοπώρου υπάρχει και σε άλλους λαούς. Στην Αμερική ονομάζεται Thanksgiving.

THE GODESS DIMITRA, THE SWEETS OF CHRISTMAS AND THANKSGIVING

I have always wondered why donuts (“loukoumades”) are made on Mount Athos on the day of Saint Andreas (11/30) or elsewhere of Saint Stylianos11/26). I was wondering if it had anything to do with the Throne Feast of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, since St. Andrew is considered the founder of the Church of Constantinople-Byzantium. Later I discovered that they do the same in the villages of Thrace and in other parts of Greece, such as for e.g. in Evia, where I come from. The days that make donuts vary, from November 21, the feast of the Entrance of the Virgin Mary into the Temple (called “Mesosporitissa” in some places) until November 30. These days are the beginnings of sowing the fields and harvesting the olives. It seems that the custom is related to antiquity, since ancient Greeks also made “plakountas with honey” in honor of the goddess Demeter with the fresh oil that came out of the olive press, a tradition that continues even today as we have seen, with a Christian orientation. The famous Christmas greek sweets, the “melomakarona”, are related to the offering of semolina, honey and nuts to the ancient goddess of the harvest. The supply of fruits and oil is marked in other parts of the country with the delivery of a sweet soup with wheat and nuts, the known-as “Barbara” in memory of the homonymous saint, in early December. The tradition of blessing-offering fruits and oil derivatives at the end of Autumn also exists in other countries. In America it is called “Thanksgiving”.

Στον αρχαίο ελληνικό μύθο ο Ορφέας, γιος του θεού Απόλλωνα (ή κατά άλλους του Θράκα βασιλιά Αίαγρου), φτάνει μέχρι τον Κάτω Κόσμο – Άδη ζητώντας να σώσει την αγαπημένη του Ευρυδίκη. Ένα πολύ συνηθισμένο επεισόδιο από τον μύθο του θρυλικού μουσικού είναι η σκηνή που με την λύρα του μαγεύει τα ζώα γύρω του. Αυτή η σκηνή απεικονίστηκε πολύ στα μωσαϊκά πατώματα που κοσμούσαν τις Ελληνικές και Ρωμαϊκές βίλλες. Ήταν μια πολύ καλή ευκαιρία για τους χριστιανούς να υιοθετήσουν την απεικόνιση. Ο Χριστός, Υιός του παμβασιλέως Θεού, σαν άλλος Ορφέας κατεβαίνει στον Κάτω Κόσμο – Άδη για να σώσει και ζωοποιήσει την αγαπημένη του Ψυχή, την ανθρώπινη ψυχή. Από την υπέροχη μουσική του Ορφέα μαγεύονται τα ζώα γύρω του, όπως οι χριστιανοί θεωρούσαν ότι μαγεύονταν οι έχοντες ζωώδη βίο από τα υπέροχα λόγια του χριστιανικού κηρύγματος. THE “PANAGIARIA” AND THE SEALS OF THE MOTHER OF GOD / ΤΑ «ΠΑΝΑΓΙΑΡΙΑ» ΚΑΙ ΟΙ ΣΦΡΑΓΙΔΕΣ ΤΗΣ ΘΕΟΤΟΚΟΥ

The Monastery of Patmos houses two 15th-century ecclesiastical vessels called “Panagiarion”. These are two carved, gilded and painted hollow parts, joined by a clasp and closed to hold a piece of bread, with the triangular seal of the Mother of God. This seal shows a triangle, flanked by a schematic spear and a sponge, while inside it are inscribed two Greek letters of the name of the Mother of God, Mi below and Theta above ( ΜΘ -Meter Theou-Mother of God). The combination of names and monogram-seals was a favorite habit of the Byzantines. The vessel is carried on festive days after the Liturgy to the Monastery Dining Hall in procession, where a special Service is held after the meal, the “Exaltation of the Virgin Mary”.   On Mount Nerezi near Skopje, Alexios of the great aristocratic family of the Angels built a church and monastery in honor of Saint Panteleimon. In 1066 the frescoes were finished and the Monastery began to function. On the central shrine of the marble Iconostasis, an elegant Komnenian Saint Panteleimon was painted with lush, tufted hair and refined facial features. The Roman paenula that covers his shoulders is king-like, purple in color with gold edges. His tunic has gold cuffs and a gold royal “maniakin” around his neck. The open box with the medical preparations that he holds in his left hand is also gilded, while with his right he points towards it, as if saying: "come to me and be healed for free." The widespread use of the veneration of the money-free physician saint in antiquity also shows how financially inaccessible medical assistance would have been. + E .
