ΟΚΤΑΓΩΝΟ «ΜΑΡΤΥΡΙΟ» ΤΗΣ ΘΕΟΤΟΚΟΥ ΚΟΝΤΑ ΣΤΗΝ ΒΗΘΛΕΕΜ



Στο βίο του αγίου Θεοδοσίου του Κοινοβιάρχου διαβάζουμε ότι το 456 μια χήρα, ονόματι Ικελία ανήγειρε ή ανακαίνισε το «Παλαιό Κάθισμα», στο δρόμο από Ιερουσαλήμ προς Βηθλεέμ, και εγκατέστησε εκεί τον νεαρό τότε (33χρονο) μοναχό Θεοδόσιο. Πρόκειται για μία πολύ μεγάλη οκταγωνική κατασκευή (43 x 52 m) του 5ου αιώνα, που ανακαλύφθηκε τυχαία το 1992 κατά την διάνοιξη του αυτοκινητόδρομου της Ιερουσαλήμ προς Ιεριχώ. Μοιάζει με το αρχαίο οκτάγωνο Mαρτύριο της Γέννησης στην Βηθλεέμ και με το Θόλο του Βράχου της Ιερουσαλήμ. Θεωρείται μάλλον ο αρχαιότερος ναός στην Αγία Γη προς τιμήν της Θεοτόκου, αμέσως μετά την Δ΄ Οικουμενική Σύνοδο του 451. Χτίστηκε καθ’ υπόδειξη του Αρχιεπισκόπου της Ιερουσαλήμ Ιουβενάλιου, ίσως σαν ευχαριστία στην Παναγία που η Σύνοδος τον αναγνώρισε ως Πατριάρχη. Η παράδοση θέλει να είναι εκεί το σημείο που ξαπόστασε η Θεοτόκος στο δρόμο για την Βηθλεέμ, όπως αναφέρεται και στο απόκρυφο «Πρωτευαγγέλιο του Ιακώβου».

«καὶ ἤγγισαν. ἐπὶ μίλιον τρίτον, καὶ ἐστράφη ᾿Ιωσὴφ καὶ εἶδεν αὐτὴν στυγνὴν. καὶ ἔλεγεν: ἴσως τὸ ἔν αὐτῇ χειμάζει αὐτήν. καὶ πάλιν Ἐστράφη ᾿Ιωσὴφ καὶ εἶδεν αὐτὴν γελοῦσαν καὶ εἶπεν: Μαριάμμη, τί ἐστίν σοι τοῦτο, ὅτι τὸ πρόσωπόν σου βλέπω ποτὲ μὲν γελοῦντα ποτὲ δὲ στυγνάζον; καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ: ᾿Ιωσήφ, ὅτι δύο λαοὺς βλέπω ὃν τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς μου, ἔνα κλαίοντα καὶ κοπτόμενον καὶ ἕνα χαίροντα καὶ ἀγαλλιῶντα. καὶ ἤλθωσαν ἀνὰ μέσον τῆς ὁδοῦ, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Μαριάμμη: κατάγαγε με ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄνου, ὅτι τὸ ἔν ἐμοὶ ἐπείγει με προελθεῖν. καὶ κατήγαγεν αὐτὴν εκεὶ» (Πρωτ. OCTAGON “MARTYRIUM” OF THE VIRGIN NEAR BETHLEHEM

In the vita of St. Theodosius the Cenobiarch is said that in 456 a widow named Ikelia erected or renovated the “Old Kathisma”, on the road from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, and settled there the young (33 years old) monk Theodosius. This is a very large octagonal structure (43 x 52 m) of the 5th century, which was accidentally discovered in 1992 during the opening of the Jerusalem-Jericho highway. It resembles the ancient octagonal martyrium of the Nativity in Bethlehem and the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. It is considered to be the oldest church in the Holy Land in honor of the Virgin Mary, immediately after the Fourth Ecumenical Council of 451. It was built at the suggestion of the Archbishop of Jerusalem, Juvenal, perhaps as a thank to Mary and the Synod for recognizing him as Patriarch. Tradition has it that the Virgin rested on the road to Bethlehem, as mentioned in the “Gospel of James”, one of the Apocrypha.

“And as they neared the third mile, Joseph turned and saw that she was sad. And he was saying, “Likely the one inside her is troubling her. And again, Joseph turned and saw her laughing, and he said to her, “Mary, why are you like this, that I see your face laughing at one time, but then sad? And she said to him, “It’s because I see two people in my eyes. One is crying and mourning, and one is rejoicing and exulting. And they came to the middle of the journey, and Mary said to him, “Joseph, take me down from the donkey, because the one who’s inside me is pushing to come out. And he took her down from the donkey” (17,2-3).

ΟΡΦΕΑΣ ΚΑΙ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ / ORPHEUS AND CHRIST

Στον αρχαίο ελληνικό μύθο ο Ορφέας, γιος του θεού Απόλλωνα (ή κατά άλλους του Θράκα βασιλιά Αίαγρου), φτάνει μέχρι τον Κάτω Κόσμο – Άδη ζητώντας να σώσει την αγαπημένη του Ευρυδίκη. Ένα πολύ συνηθισμένο επεισόδιο από τον μύθο του θρυλικού μουσικού είναι η σκηνή που με την λύρα του μαγεύει τα ζώα γύρω του. Αυτή η σκηνή απεικονίστηκε πολύ στα μωσαϊκά πατώματα που κοσμούσαν τις Ελληνικές και Ρωμαϊκές βίλλες. Ήταν μια πολύ καλή ευκαιρία για τους χριστιανούς να υιοθετήσουν την απεικόνιση. Ο Χριστός, Υιός του παμβασιλέως Θεού, σαν άλλος Ορφέας κατεβαίνει στον Κάτω Κόσμο – Άδη για να σώσει και ζωοποιήσει την αγαπημένη του Ψυχή, την ανθρώπινη ψυχή. Από την υπέροχη μουσική του Ορφέα μαγεύονται τα ζώα γύρω του, όπως οι χριστιανοί θεωρούσαν ότι μαγεύονταν οι έχοντες ζωώδη βίο από τα υπέροχα λόγια του χριστιανικού κηρύγματος. Δίπλα στην Ορφική σκηνή, συνήθως εικονίζονταν και σκηνές κυνηγιού ( venatio ). Και αυτές οι σκηνές απέκτησαν χριστιανικό χαρακτήρα αφού πάμπολλοι χριστιανοί καταδικάστηκαν ...

THE “PANAGIARIA” AND THE SEALS OF THE MOTHER OF GOD / ΤΑ «ΠΑΝΑΓΙΑΡΙΑ» ΚΑΙ ΟΙ ΣΦΡΑΓΙΔΕΣ ΤΗΣ ΘΕΟΤΟΚΟΥ

The Monastery of Patmos houses two 15th-century ecclesiastical vessels called “Panagiarion”. These are two carved, gilded and painted hollow parts, joined by a clasp and closed to hold a piece of bread, with the triangular seal of the Mother of God. This seal shows a triangle, flanked by a schematic spear and a sponge, while inside it are inscribed two Greek letters of the name of the Mother of God, Mi below and Theta above ( ΜΘ -Meter Theou-Mother of God). The combination of names and monogram-seals was a favorite habit of the Byzantines. The vessel is carried on festive days after the Liturgy to the Monastery Dining Hall in procession, where a special Service is held after the meal, the “Exaltation of the Virgin Mary”. Unfortunately, this service has not been studied satisfactorily to elucidate its roots and its usefulness. Therefore, its vessels, which are kept in Museums and Monasteries, still remain unexplored. FREE MEDICAL CARE / ΔΩΡΕΑΝ ΙΑΤΡΙΚΗ ΠΕΡΙΘΑΛΨΗ

  On Mount Nerezi near Skopje, Alexios of the great aristocratic family of the Angels built a church and monastery in honor of Saint Panteleimon. In 1066 the frescoes were finished and the Monastery began to function. On the central shrine of the marble Iconostasis, an elegant Komnenian Saint Panteleimon was painted with lush, tufted hair and refined facial features. The Roman paenula that covers his shoulders is king-like, purple in color with gold edges. His tunic has gold cuffs and a gold royal “maniakin” around his neck. The open box with the medical preparations that he holds in his left hand is also gilded, while with his right he points towards it, as if saying: "come to me and be healed for free." The widespread use of the veneration of the money-free physician saint in antiquity also shows how financially inaccessible medical assistance would have been. + E .
