THE MONASTERY OF THE PARTRIDGE / Η ΜΟΝΗ ΤΗΣ ΠΕΡΔΙΚΑΣ


In the mosaic map of the Holy Places of the village of Madaba in today's Jordan, a work of the 6th century, we can see next to Jericho and the Jordan River the "threshing floor of Atad, today Bethagla" with a building marking it. It is about the threshing floor of a man named Atad or Atath, where the Egyptians carried the dead body and made the funeral lament of Joseph (Gen. 50,10).

In the middle of the 5th century AD in this place, a Lavra was built by the monk Gerasimus, referred to in the sources of the time as "of Kalamon" or otherwise "of Penthoukla" near the spring of partridge. "Bethagla - Beth Hagla" in Hebrew means the house of the partridge, the same Ein Eyla in Arabic. The words Hagla, Eila, Penthukla and Bethagla are obviously related, since they sound alike. They all talk about partridges. The ascet Gerasimus built his Lavra near the source of the partridge, so the name of the little bird was also given to the Lavra. The name "Kalamon" may be related to an attempt by some Greek speakers to beautify the "barbaric" foreign name of the partridge, changing it with the name of the place where it builds its nest, the reeds (Kalamia).

A hundred years later, however, on the map of Madaba, the common people continued to call the monastery by its popular name, partridge. Saint Gerasimos of Jordan celebrates on March 4.

Στον ψηφιδωτό χάρτη των Αγίων Τόπων του χωριού Μαδαβά της σημερινής Ιορδανίας, έργο του 6ου αιώνα, διακρίνουμε δίπλα στην Ιεριχώ και τον ποταμό Ιορδάνη το «αλώνι του Ατάδ, σήμερα Βηθαγλά» με ένα κτήριο να το σηματοδοτεί. Πρόκειται για το αλώνι ενός ανθρώπου ονόματι Ατάδ ή Ατάθ, όπου οι Αιγύπτιοι μετέφεραν το νεκρό σώμα και έκαναν τον επικήδειο θρήνο του Ιωσήφ (Γεν. 50,10).

Στα μέσα του 5ου αιώνα μ.Χ. σε αυτόν τον τόπο χτίστηκε από τον μοναχό Γεράσιμο η Λαύρα που αναφέρεται στις πηγές της εποχής ως «του Καλαμώνος» ή αλλιώς «του Πενθουκλά» κοντά στην πηγή της Πέρδικας. «Βηθαγλά - Μπεθ Χαγκλά» στα εβραϊκά σημαίνει το σπίτι της πέρδικας, το ίδιο Έιν Εϊλά στα αραβικά. Οι λέξεις Χαγκλά, Εϊλά, Πενθουκλά και Μπεθαγκλά προφανώς σχετίζονται, μιας και είναι ομόηχες. Όλες μιλούν για πέρδικες. Ο ασκητής Γεράσιμος έχτισε την Λαύρα του κοντά στην πηγή της πέρδικας, οπότε η ονομασία του μικρού πτηνού δόθηκε και στην Λαύρα. Η ονομασία «του Καλαμώνος» ίσως να σχετίζεται με μια προσπάθεια κάποιων ελληνοφώνων να ωραιοποιήσουν την «βαρβαρική» ξενική ονομασία της πέρδικας, αλλάζοντάς την με το όνομα του τόπου που φτιάχνει την φωλιά της, τα καλάμια.

Εκατό χρόνια μετά πάντως, στον χάρτη της Μαδαβά, ο απλός κόσμος συνέχιζε να ονομάζει το μοναστήρι με το λαϊκό όνομά του, της πέρδικας. Ο άγιος Γεράσιμος του Ιορδάνη γιορτάζει στις 4 Μαρτίου.

Στον αρχαίο ελληνικό μύθο ο Ορφέας, γιος του θεού Απόλλωνα (ή κατά άλλους του Θράκα βασιλιά Αίαγρου), φτάνει μέχρι τον Κάτω Κόσμο – Άδη ζητώντας να σώσει την αγαπημένη του Ευρυδίκη. Ένα πολύ συνηθισμένο επεισόδιο από τον μύθο του θρυλικού μουσικού είναι η σκηνή που με την λύρα του μαγεύει τα ζώα γύρω του. Αυτή η σκηνή απεικονίστηκε πολύ στα μωσαϊκά πατώματα που κοσμούσαν τις Ελληνικές και Ρωμαϊκές βίλλες. Ήταν μια πολύ καλή ευκαιρία για τους χριστιανούς να υιοθετήσουν την απεικόνιση. Ο Χριστός, Υιός του παμβασιλέως Θεού, σαν άλλος Ορφέας κατεβαίνει στον Κάτω Κόσμο – Άδη για να σώσει και ζωοποιήσει την αγαπημένη του Ψυχή, την ανθρώπινη ψυχή. Από την υπέροχη μουσική του Ορφέα μαγεύονται τα ζώα γύρω του, όπως οι χριστιανοί θεωρούσαν ότι μαγεύονταν οι έχοντες ζωώδη βίο από τα υπέροχα λόγια του χριστιανικού κηρύγματος. Δίπλα στην Ορφική σκηνή, συνήθως εικονίζονταν και σκηνές κυνηγιού ( venatio ). Και αυτές οι σκηνές απέκτησαν χριστιανικό χαρακτήρα αφού πάμπολλοι χριστιανοί καταδικάστηκαν ...

THE “PANAGIARIA” AND THE SEALS OF THE MOTHER OF GOD / ΤΑ «ΠΑΝΑΓΙΑΡΙΑ» ΚΑΙ ΟΙ ΣΦΡΑΓΙΔΕΣ ΤΗΣ ΘΕΟΤΟΚΟΥ

The Monastery of Patmos houses two 15th-century ecclesiastical vessels called “Panagiarion”. These are two carved, gilded and painted hollow parts, joined by a clasp and closed to hold a piece of bread, with the triangular seal of the Mother of God. This seal shows a triangle, flanked by a schematic spear and a sponge, while inside it are inscribed two Greek letters of the name of the Mother of God, Mi below and Theta above ( ΜΘ -Meter Theou-Mother of God). The combination of names and monogram-seals was a favorite habit of the Byzantines. The vessel is carried on festive days after the Liturgy to the Monastery Dining Hall in procession, where a special Service is held after the meal, the “Exaltation of the Virgin Mary”. Unfortunately, this service has not been studied satisfactorily to elucidate its roots and its usefulness. Therefore, its vessels, which are kept in Museums and Monasteries, still remain unexplored. FREE MEDICAL CARE / ΔΩΡΕΑΝ ΙΑΤΡΙΚΗ ΠΕΡΙΘΑΛΨΗ

  On Mount Nerezi near Skopje, Alexios of the great aristocratic family of the Angels built a church and monastery in honor of Saint Panteleimon. In 1066 the frescoes were finished and the Monastery began to function. On the central shrine of the marble Iconostasis, an elegant Komnenian Saint Panteleimon was painted with lush, tufted hair and refined facial features. The Roman paenula that covers his shoulders is king-like, purple in color with gold edges. His tunic has gold cuffs and a gold royal “maniakin” around his neck. The open box with the medical preparations that he holds in his left hand is also gilded, while with his right he points towards it, as if saying: "come to me and be healed for free." The widespread use of the veneration of the money-free physician saint in antiquity also shows how financially inaccessible medical assistance would have been. + E .
