URBANUS OF MACEDONIA / URBANUS ΤΗΣ ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΙΑΣ

 


John, the Archbishop of Thessaloniki at the beginning of the 7th century states that Thessalonians are disciples of the apostles Paul and Andrew. Professor Mr. Ar. Mentzos claims that a silver box with two apostles in front of Christ (today in the Museum of Byzantine Culture) depicts the two founders of Christianity in the city of Thessaloniki, as does a stone seal of blessing with the two apostles and Christ on a medallion on the Cross with the inscription BLESSING FROM THE LORD TO YOU AND FROM THE SAINTS ANDREW AND… surrounding it.

The view of Andrew as a co-founder of the Christian community may be related to the installation as bishop of Macedonia of Andrew's disciple and assistant, Urbanus, one of the 70 apostles. While the Acts of the Apostles mentions that Paul and Syla - perhaps also Timothy - stayed in Thessaloniki for 3 weeks at Jason's house, there is no mention of the installation of a bishop. This could have happened during a subsequent visit by an apostle, apparently Andrew, who installed Urbanus.

Paul, however, recognizes Urbanus as “our co-worker”, since that is how he calls him at the end of his letter to the Church of Rome. The plural “our” may also imply the apostle Andrew.

The Latin name Urbanus means "from the city, the urban one".

The apostle Urbanus is celebrated on October 31.

Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Θεσσαλονίκης Ιωάννης στις αρχές του 7ου αιώνα αναφέρει ότι οι Θεσσαλονικείς είναι μαθητές των αποστόλων Παύλου και Ανδρέου. Ο καθηγητής κ. Αρ. Μέντζος υποστηρίζει ότι ένα ασημένιο κιβωτίδιο με δύο αποστόλους μπροστά στον Χριστό (σήμερα στο Μουσείο Βυζαντινού Πολιτισμού) εικονίζει τους δύο ιδρυτές του Χριστιανισμού στην πόλη της Θεσσαλονίκης, όπως και μια λίθινη σφραγίδα ευλογίας με τους δύο αποστόλους και τον Χριστό σε μετάλλιο πάνω στον Σταυρό με την επιγραφή [ΕΥΛ]Ο ΓΙΑ/Κ[ΥΡΙ]ΟΥ/ΕΦ/ΙMAΣ/ΚAΙ/ ΤΩΝ/AΓIΩΝ /Α ΔΡΕΟΥ/ΚΑΙ… να την περιτρέχει.

Η θεώρηση του Ανδρέα ως συνιδρυτή της χριστιανικής κοινότητας ίσως σχετίζεται με την εγκαθίδρυση ως επισκόπου Μακεδονίας του μαθητή και βοηθού του Ανδρέα, Ουρβανού, ενός από τους 70 αποστόλους. Ενώ οι Πράξεις των Αποστόλων αναφέρουν ότι ο Παύλος με τον Σίλα -ίσως και τον Τιμόθεο- έμεινε 3 εβδομάδες στην Θεσσαλονίκη στο σπίτι του Ιάσωνα, δεν γίνεται μνεία σε εγκαθίδρυση επισκόπου. Θα μπορούσε αυτό να έγινε σε επόμενη διάβαση αποστόλου, προφανώς του Ανδρέα, ο οποίος εγκαθίδρυσε τον Ουρβανό.

Ο Παύλος πάντως αναγνωρίζει τον Ουρβανό ως «συνεργὸν ἡμῶν» (συνεργάτη μας), αφού έτσι τον αποκαλεί στο τέλος της επιστολής του προς την Εκκλησία της Ρώμης. Ο πληθυντικός αριθμός «μας», ίσως υπονοεί και τον απόστολο Ανδρέα.

Το λατινικό όνομα Ουρβανός (Urbanus) σημαίνει ο «προερχόμενος από την πόλη, ο αστικός».

Ο απόστολος Ουρβανός εορτάζει στις 31 Οκτωβρίου.

Στον αρχαίο ελληνικό μύθο ο Ορφέας, γιος του θεού Απόλλωνα (ή κατά άλλους του Θράκα βασιλιά Αίαγρου), φτάνει μέχρι τον Κάτω Κόσμο – Άδη ζητώντας να σώσει την αγαπημένη του Ευρυδίκη. Ένα πολύ συνηθισμένο επεισόδιο από τον μύθο του θρυλικού μουσικού είναι η σκηνή που με την λύρα του μαγεύει τα ζώα γύρω του. Αυτή η σκηνή απεικονίστηκε πολύ στα μωσαϊκά πατώματα που κοσμούσαν τις Ελληνικές και Ρωμαϊκές βίλλες. Ήταν μια πολύ καλή ευκαιρία για τους χριστιανούς να υιοθετήσουν την απεικόνιση. Ο Χριστός, Υιός του παμβασιλέως Θεού, σαν άλλος Ορφέας κατεβαίνει στον Κάτω Κόσμο – Άδη για να σώσει και ζωοποιήσει την αγαπημένη του Ψυχή, την ανθρώπινη ψυχή. Από την υπέροχη μουσική του Ορφέα μαγεύονται τα ζώα γύρω του, όπως οι χριστιανοί θεωρούσαν ότι μαγεύονταν οι έχοντες ζωώδη βίο από τα υπέροχα λόγια του χριστιανικού κηρύγματος. Δίπλα στην Ορφική σκηνή, συνήθως εικονίζονταν και σκηνές κυνηγιού ( venatio ). Και αυτές οι σκηνές απέκτησαν χριστιανικό χαρακτήρα αφού πάμπολλοι χριστιανοί καταδικάστηκαν ...

THE “PANAGIARIA” AND THE SEALS OF THE MOTHER OF GOD / ΤΑ «ΠΑΝΑΓΙΑΡΙΑ» ΚΑΙ ΟΙ ΣΦΡΑΓΙΔΕΣ ΤΗΣ ΘΕΟΤΟΚΟΥ

The Monastery of Patmos houses two 15th-century ecclesiastical vessels called “Panagiarion”. These are two carved, gilded and painted hollow parts, joined by a clasp and closed to hold a piece of bread, with the triangular seal of the Mother of God. This seal shows a triangle, flanked by a schematic spear and a sponge, while inside it are inscribed two Greek letters of the name of the Mother of God, Mi below and Theta above ( ΜΘ -Meter Theou-Mother of God). The combination of names and monogram-seals was a favorite habit of the Byzantines. The vessel is carried on festive days after the Liturgy to the Monastery Dining Hall in procession, where a special Service is held after the meal, the “Exaltation of the Virgin Mary”. Unfortunately, this service has not been studied satisfactorily to elucidate its roots and its usefulness. Therefore, its vessels, which are kept in Museums and Monasteries, still remain unexplored. FREE MEDICAL CARE / ΔΩΡΕΑΝ ΙΑΤΡΙΚΗ ΠΕΡΙΘΑΛΨΗ

  On Mount Nerezi near Skopje, Alexios of the great aristocratic family of the Angels built a church and monastery in honor of Saint Panteleimon. In 1066 the frescoes were finished and the Monastery began to function. On the central shrine of the marble Iconostasis, an elegant Komnenian Saint Panteleimon was painted with lush, tufted hair and refined facial features. The Roman paenula that covers his shoulders is king-like, purple in color with gold edges. His tunic has gold cuffs and a gold royal “maniakin” around his neck. The open box with the medical preparations that he holds in his left hand is also gilded, while with his right he points towards it, as if saying: "come to me and be healed for free." The widespread use of the veneration of the money-free physician saint in antiquity also shows how financially inaccessible medical assistance would have been. + E .
